Rendering Technologies in Unreal Engine 5

  • Scientific research comparing UE5 (Lumen & Nanite) against legacy UE4 rendering pipelines
  • Analysed performance, visual fidelity and architectural differences using controlled test scenes
  • Demonstrated deep understanding of real-time rendering and modern graphics pipelines

Overview

Final year dissertation project comparing the visual and performance characteristics of Unreal Engine 5's groundbreaking Lumen and Nanite systems against the traditional rendering pipeline from UE4.

What I did

  • Designed controlled test scenes to isolate variables affecting render performance across both engine generations
  • Benchmarked frame times, draw calls and memory usage at various scene complexities and resolutions
  • Evaluated Lumen's dynamic global illumination against baked lighting solutions for real-time accuracy
  • Analysed Nanite's virtualised geometry system and its impact on polygon budget constraints
  • Produced a formal research report with structured methodology, results and critical analysis

Technologies

Unreal Engine 5 Lumen Nanite UE4 HLSL Real-Time Rendering Benchmarking

Outcome

Demonstrated mastery of modern GPU rendering architectures and real-time graphics research methodology. Achieved a strong result contributing to the overall Strong 2:1 degree classification.

Secure Access Management System

  • Embedded access-control system using an ARM LPC1768 microcontroller and NFC reader
  • Authentication logic for authorised keycards with real-time LED hardware feedback
  • Applied embedded C/C++, hardware interfacing and secure system design principles

Overview

An embedded hardware-software system for physical access control using NFC technology on an ARM microcontroller, implementing authentication, logging and real-time user feedback.

What I did

  • Programmed an ARM LPC1768 Cortex-M3 microcontroller using embedded C/C++
  • Integrated an NFC reader module via SPI to read and validate authorised keycards
  • Implemented a keycard registry with authorisation logic and deny/allow decision flow
  • Provided real-time physical feedback via GPIO-controlled LEDs (green/red for access state)
  • Applied interrupt-driven design patterns to handle concurrent hardware events reliably

Technologies

ARM LPC1768 Embedded C/C++ NFC/RFID SPI GPIO Hardware Interfacing

Outcome

Produced a fully functional access control prototype demonstrating strong embedded systems fundamentals, hardware-software co-design and secure system thinking.

Together Culture — Full-Stack Desktop App

  • Led a 4-person team to deliver a C# WinForms application for a real client
  • Database-driven functionality using SQL Server, managed via phpMyAdmin
  • Worked across frontend and backend applying software engineering best practices

Overview

A full-stack C# desktop application delivered for a real external client, Together Culture, built by a team of four. The system manages community events, member data and internal workflows.

What I did

  • Led the 4-person development team as technical lead, coordinating task delegation and code reviews
  • Architected the application structure using WinForms with a layered data access pattern
  • Built and managed the SQL Server relational database schema with phpMyAdmin as the admin interface
  • Implemented CRUD operations, form validation, user authentication and role-based access control
  • Delivered iteratively with client demos, incorporating feedback across multiple sprint cycles

Technologies

C# .NET WinForms SQL Server phpMyAdmin Agile Team Leadership

Outcome

Successfully delivered a production-ready application to a real client on schedule, demonstrating full-stack development capability, team collaboration and client-facing communication.
